PERSONAL IDENTITY CARD

Personal identity card (ID Card) is a document for every citizen of the Republic of Lithuania at the age of 16 who is not in possession of a Citizen’s Passport issued prior to 1 January 2003.. ID card can be issued to a person who is not 16 years old yet, if necessary. ID card is can be used to travel abroad to countries with whom appropriate treaties and agreements have been concluded.

ID card is made of polycarbonate with embedded contact and contactless chips. All data on the polycarbonate is laser-engraved.

Purpose of the ID card, procedures for its issuance, change and usage, and data to be engraved are regulated by the Law on Identity Cards of the Republic of Lithuania (Official gazette, 2001, No. 97-3417; 2008, No. 76-3007).

ID card as issued since 1 January 2009 complies with the requirements set in the Council Regulation (EC) No 2252/2004 of 13 December 2004 on standards for security features and biometrics in passports and travel documents issued by Member States, and with recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
